While using the variety of communications technologies available,
children are often inadvertently exposing themselves to cyberthreats. This
workshop will provide an overview of these threats and a discussion of schools’
responsibilities. Participants will be introduced to techniques commonly used to
find online information about individuals and how these resources can be
exploited by nefarious characters. Hands-on activities will be integrated into
the workshop. An overview of available resources for schools and families will
be available.

This session will provide an overview on the growing trend of gaming as
an instructional tool in the classroom. The research of leaders in this field
such as Kurt Squire, Henry Jenkins, James Paul Gee, and Sasha Barab will be
presented. Examples of educational games will be demonstrated to include the use
of online gaming, simulations, and gaming systems such as the Wii. Each attendee
will receive a CD that includes all information presented.

enriched with their learning. In addition, with the right technology, teachers

In this workshop,
participants will become familiar with and learn to use the free Google Earth
(GE) program as an educational tool. Participants will gain the ability to
create place marks, tours, and map overlays as well as use tools with GE to
calculate area, perimeter, distance, and make graphs to show things like
population values of cities or states. Applications of GE for geography, math,
science, English, and history will be discussed.

Students and Maybe Even Teachers!
