In addition to a search engine, Google offers a number of tools including a word processor and spreadsheet, an online calendar, online maps, and an RSS reader. Best of all, it’s all free!  This session will provide a hands-on introduction to Google tools and how to use them in your classroom.

While using the variety of communications technologies available, children are often inadvertently exposing themselves to cyberthreats. This workshop will provide an overview of these threats and a discussion of schools’ responsibilities. Participants will be introduced to techniques commonly used to find online information about individuals and how these resources can be exploited by nefarious characters. Hands-on activities will be integrated into the workshop. An overview of available resources for schools and families will be available.

This session will provide an overview on the growing trend of gaming as an instructional tool in the classroom. The research of leaders in this field such as Kurt Squire, Henry Jenkins, James Paul Gee, and Sasha Barab will be presented. Examples of educational games will be demonstrated to include the use of online gaming, simulations, and gaming systems such as the Wii. Each attendee will receive a CD that includes all information presented.

Description:  Today’s students live in a multimedia world. This demonstration will show the technology that has been integrated into daily instruction and the strategies teachers are using to reach digital students. During the presentation, we will present how technology is addressing the learning styles of all students and engaging them to succeed. Incorporating the right technology can motivate digital natives to become enriched with their learning.  In addition, with the right technology, teachers work collaboratively to build and deliver more engaging and enriching lessons.

W21:  Google Earth to Educators: An Introduction

In this workshop, participants will become familiar with and learn to use the free Google Earth (GE) program as an educational tool. Participants will gain the ability to create place marks, tours, and map overlays as well as use tools with GE to calculate area, perimeter, distance, and make graphs to show things like population values of cities or states. Applications of GE for geography, math, science, English, and history will be discussed.

W22:  Photostory: Digital Story Telling by Students and Maybe Even Teachers!

Using free software, students can create stories using pictures, text, narration, and sound. Come learn how you can have your young learners (we have second graders doing it) creating digital stories in no time at all.  Once your students master it, they can teach their teachers how to use it!
