While flexible scheduling is considered best practice by the library
profession, it can carry with it genuine challenges, while practitioners
report that a fixed library schedule can offer benefits to students and
librarians alike. This workshop examines what the research on flexible
scheduling says (and doesn't say), examines the benefits of fixed schedules
in a test-driven, budget-stressed educational environment, and offers
suggestions to make both fixed and flexible schedules stronger in real
schools.

Online Encyclopedias

A debate has surfaced as to which online encyclopedias are most beneficial
in developing students' information literacy skills. Open networking
resources like Wikipedia have been called into question in terms of
readability, authority, and accuracy. Using Wikipedia as an example, the
presenters will invite audience members to (1) examine common understandings
and assumptions about the nature of truth and authority in information, (2)
increase understanding about the ways Wikipedia and other open content
online sources work, (3) join the presenters in a mock debate comparing
Wikipedia with more traditional sources of information, e.g., Encyclopedia
Britannica Online, and (4) explore a dynamic use for developing information
literacy skills through a wiki tool developed by one of the presenters.

Vividly Inventory your "Stuff"

Learn why and how to effectively document the contents of your home,
classroom, or media center using digital photography, video, audio, and free
web-based tools. The presenter will (1) share the experience of creating a
home and office inventory, including successes and mistakes, (2) present the
essentials for full documentation of possessions for insurance purposes, (3)
show how to best shoot digital photographs of various items, (4) demonstrate
ways to use commonly available software to create photo/video/text
inventories, (5) present samples of specialized home-inventory software, (6)
suggest how these projects could be used with P-12 students, and (7) provide
inspiration for participants to get ORGANIZED!

This session is geared toward teachers who are intimidated or unfamiliar
with incorporating technology into their classroom, but are looking for easy
beginner applications. Teachers will learn about more efficient web
searches, quality websites, and free resources. The following are examples
of resources that will be addressed: United Streaming, Audacity, Photostory,
Weblog pages, and PowerPoint. This session will introduce beginning users to
resources that have been tested by fellow techno-goobs. The presenters are
teachers just like you who are learning to integrate technology in their own
classrooms. They are presenting this session to share their own trials and
tribulations and to share current resources that they have found easy to
use.

of Mind with Technology

The purpose of the session is to present effective instructional strategies
delivered through proven teacher-created lesson plans. The lessons are
designed to help teachers and students develop strong habits of mind, use a
variety of technology tools, and employ real-life technology skills.
Participants will know what the 16 Habits of Mind are and how they are
related to technology; understand how to create technology-integrated
lessons with a specific outcome using the method of backward design; use the
NETS*S benchmark assessments for Grades 2 and 5 to evaluate progress; use
the lessons, ideas, and tools presented to develop strong habits of mind;
and understand how to embed the teaching and assessment of technology skills
in a standards-based curriculum.

Thomas Friedman's "The World is Flat" describes how technology is changing
the way that we live, work, and communicate and outlines a number of
profound impacts that technology is already having on our daily lives.
Emerging technologies, including global networks, increasingly powerful
computers and computing devices, and collaboration tools and software are
shaping this new world. Schools need to consider how these technologies are
transforming the nature of effective instruction. Students need to be
proficient with these tools, but they also need to be proficient with the
new processes, ideas, and attitudes that accompany the use of these new
technologies. This session will provide ideas and strategies for using
technology to teach the skills that will be required for success in
tomorrow's world.

Podcasting has become one of the best ways to deliver audio and video
content to your listeners, be they students, parents, or community members.
Sadly, many people believe that podcasting belongs only to the Apple users
of this world. PC users take heart! Using very simple tools such as Audacity
and Feed4All, podcast creation is open to all, regardless of what platform
they are using. No need to use a Mac or even an iPod for that matter. During
this session, receive an outline of the very basics of podcast creation. See
examples of tools and resources so you have the tools to go home and begin
creation of your own podcast.

be actively engaged throughout the day, and technology integration is the
way to do that. Interactive technology tools allow teachers to hold
students' attention while integrating the technology into the curriculum.
This exciting session will show teachers how to use interactive whiteboards
and other interactive tools to grab their students' attention and not let
go. Attendants will learn how to effectively use interactive School Pads in
the primary, elementary, and middle grades. The session will also introduce
attendees to other opportunities for technology integration in the
elementary and middle grades. Lessons and activities will be shared.

Teach 21st Century Learners

Through the leadership and guidance of our Board of Education, the Cherokee
County School District has established Teach 21, a multi-year initiative to
offer educators innovative methods for delivering instruction and engaging
students in the learning process. This technology endorsement includes a
professional development component for teachers that encompasses more than
200 hours of rigorous training and standards-based technology projects
conducted with students. Emerging technologies such as interactive
whiteboards, student response devices, multimedia projectors, classroom
audio systems, podcasting and vidoecasting equipment, and additional
computer access has been placed in Teach 21 classrooms. The program is
geared at developing 21st century teachers who engage students through the
use of technology.
