Session:   78   Title:  One size Does NOT Fit All: Custom Learning in the Classroom
FEATURED SPEAKER
Presenter(s):   Meg Ormiston, Tec Teachers

Time: Thursday, 8:15 - 9:15, Location: Salon 2, Seats: 260
At home the players in the video games are customized to match the characteristics of friends. Watching television is now on-demand using TIVO, and only the music we like is shuffled through the headphones. At home, kids pick and choose what they would like to know more about, and in what way the information will be filtered to them—info snacking here and there. What does this mean for schools? One size does not fit all. Instruction can be differentiated to help meet the needs of the learner, and technology can help deliver instruction in powerful new ways. Check out the way podcasts can be used to reach your English language learners. Support your struggling readers as they construct meaning by creating a video, or activate prior knowledge for all students by streaming video before your lesson. All of this is possible today; bring custom learning to your classroom!

You'll get the ability to dial in exactly which user accounts are stored on a branch office DC, as well as new encryption options to make it theft-proof. But that's not all—DCPROMO gets a facelift and, well, it needed it. Find out about this and other upcoming Longhorn domain controller and AD improvements with bestselling author Mark Minasi.

Presenter(s):   Warren Goetzel, Georgia State University

Time: Thursday, 8:15 - 9:15, Location: Swiss 3-4, Seats: 88
In order to effectively integrate technology into a school's instructional program, the support of professionally trained and certified Instructional Technology Specialists is necessary. The unfortunate result of inadequate or unqualified instructional technology staff and support can be the ineffective integration of technology. In numerous classrooms, appropriate technologies sit idle, due to lack of support, despite their potential advantages to student achievement. Students need to be provided with technology-rich learning opportunities, supported by professionally trained and certified Instructional Technology Specialists, in order to develop the technological proficiencies needed to be successful in real life situations. This session will examine the current and future status of the certification and staffing of Instructional Technology Specialists in Georgia and its impact on student achievement. The main points to be analyzed and discussed are (1) the lack of state teacher certification (Georgia Educator Certificate) in Instructional Technology, (2) inconsistency in the present staffing structure and qualifications of Instructional Technology Specialists in Georgia public schools, and (3) the absence of mandatory state staffing requirements and funding of Instructional Technology Specialists in Georgia public schools.
