W3: Using
Moodle to Create ePortfolios
Presenter: Marc Dastous
Affiliation: Henry County Schools
Tuesday Morning, 9:00-12:00
Location: Board Room 2 Seats:
12 Cost: $75 (Includes

Do you plan to implement electronic portfolios
in your schools? What strategies are you
going to use to ensure a successful program?
Do you have what it takes to implement
ePortfolios successfully? A key to success
is technology integration across the curriculum.
The success, or failure, of electronic
portfolios is tied to the opportunities
for learners to develop digital artifacts;
the building blocks of their electronic
portfolios. Without technology implemented
across the curriculum, publishing portfolios
in an electronic format will be difficult
to accomplish. At ePortfolios4u we have
been involved in developing a system that
is simple for both staff and students
to use. Our "system" is adapted
from the popular open source Course Management
System, Moodle, and has the ability to
be customized for each individual system
or school. This session will show district/school
administrators and technology specialists
to modify Moodle to be used as an ePortfolio
tool.

Location: Board Room 2 Seats:
12 Cost: $75 (Includes

Students (and faculty) quickly know from
experience that the investment of time
and effort in a discussion group can grow
to unmanageable proportions. So
how can this powerful tool be continually
refreshed and used appropriately across
classes to address course objectives?
In this playful, interactive, and informal
session, participants will create and
evaluate Designed Online/Offline Group
activities within the metaphor of the
“Webminster DOG Show.” This metaphor describes
a valuable framework for designing group
activities, whether online or not, and
can be used by teachers to decide what
kind of group work will help the students
reach the course objectives. Participants
should be interested in using discussion
and other group activities as an integral
and meaningful part of course design,
be willing to collaborate with others
to design, present, and critique instructional
strategies, and be inclined to play a
bit with the DOG acronym and analogy at
the “Webminster DOG Show.”

The classroom is no longer contained by
four walls. In the future, our current
students will be communicating easily
all around the world. Come hear
how we can start that kind of collaboration
now, to prepare them for tomorrow. The
day will begin with an introduction to
blogging. Teachers will view several
good teacher-led, student created blogs.
Several sites to create blogs will be
shown. Teachers will have a chance
to log onto one student-safe blog provider
to see how they can add and edit data.
Wikis—online peoplepedias—are a very easy
way to gather information for your students
and information from your students via
an online tool. The discussion of
whether wikipedia is a true primary source
will be discussed. A mock wikipedia
will be created so that teachers can see
the usability of this online tool. Online
Projects are the easiest and most fun
way to bring collaboration into the classroom.
Teachers will be introduced to several
excellent online sources as well as directed
to good sites to find projects.
