KEYNOTE

When Wavelength was created in 1980, the founders intuitively knew that relationships, especially those that found the humor in situations, could heal and enlighten. Now current brain research confirms that emotional hooks make learning memorable, and nothing "hooks the brain" like humor.  Research also confirms that effective learning takes place in collaborative, enthusiastic professional communities; however, the national focus on standardized testing has often created cultures based in tension, fear and stress. Studies indicate that successful, productive individuals and organizations counter these stressors with a sense of humor.

Featuring a diverse cast of actors, Wavelength offers a fresh perspective on the key challenges in education today, illustrating that nothing builds community quite like a collective theatrical experience that satirizes, parodies, and celebrates the profession of teaching.  Wavelength has performed for over one million people in educational organizations worldwide, and has been a featured presenter at national conferences for ASCD, AASA, NSDC, NASSP, NAESP, NEA, AFT, NMSA, and the I.D.E.A. Fellows Program.

Wavelength's newest show, "A Funny Thing Happened Leaving No Child Behind," offers a humorous perspective to the NCLB legislation, which continues to change the landscape of public education.  "A Funny Thing" reinforces the tenets that humor, reflective practice, and teamwork serve to nurture new teachers and revitalize veteran educators. This perspective-altering send-up of the typical inservice day includes

A Greco-Roman PTA Meeting
The long (and humorous) history of current educational controversies, featuring including "Leave No Plebian Behind."

Dr. Phil
A segment providing "a wake up call" regarding NCLB and educational standards, with a showdown between the government’s NCLB representative and his teacher wife.

Zena: Teacher/Warrior Princess
A mythical heroine’s journey as a veteran teacher rekindles her early career passion.

A Surprise Keynote Address from a Current Political Figure
A powerful close to a powerful show
