Strand: Best Practices Audience: Instructional PK-12
Having the world of information at our fingertips on the Web was in itself a
powerful transformation, but being able to contribute our own knowledge and
ideas and collaborate in the construction of content is even more powerful. What
needs to change about our curriculum when our students have the ability to reach
audiences far beyond our classroom walls? What changes must we make in our
teaching as it becomes easier to bring primary sources to our students? How do
we need to rethink our ideas of literacy when we must prepare our students to
become not only readers and writers but editors and collaborators as well? How
do we best put to use the reams and reams of “digital paper” that this new
“writeable” Web provides?

Was a Textbook and a Filmstrip!
Presenter: Tony Brewer, Featured Speaker
Time: Thursday, 1:45pm - 2:45pm Location: Salon 4 Seats: 800
Strand: Best Practices Audience: Instructional PK-12
Using technology for technology's sake is akin to putting a milk bucket under a
bull. If technology does not enhance and accelerate the learning process, we may
as well continue to use slide rules and blackboards, give a quiz every Friday,
and spend our technology dollars on soon-to-be outdated textbooks. As educators
in today's fast-paced educational community, we must understand how technology
is changing the way teachers teach and how students learn. We must demonstrate
best practices and provide the necessary supports to ensure the successful
infusion of technology as a curriculum-delivering vehicle. In this session,
participants will take a closer look at what they need to know to "make
technology integration happen." They will also discover some fun things to do
with Microsoft Word and Google.

Classroom Teacher?
Presenter: Stephen Rahn, Kennesaw State University ETTC
Time: Thursday, 1:45pm - 2:45pm Location: Kenyan 1-2 Seats: 88
Strand: Internet Audience: Instructional PK-12
Teachers are using Web resources more and more. As a result, there is often
frustration caused by the need to constantly keep the material fresh and
relevant. RSS feeds allow this to happen almost seamlessly when implemented
properly. A teacher can select appropriate content and have that content
automatically updated when new information is available. RSS feeds can be
customized to refresh on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The teacher doesn't
have to do anything to receive the new content except open a reader or
aggregator. In this session, some educationally appropriate Web content will be
introduced. A discussion will follow on the problem of how to manage the content
(bookmarks). Participants will then be shown how to set up RSS feeds and see how
easy it is to organize and update.
Session: 145 Title: Introducing Computer Science
Concepts Using Jeroo
Presenter: Alan Preis, Atlanta International School
Time: Thursday, 1:45pm - 2:45pm Location: Kenyan 3-4 Seats: 88
Strand: 21st Century Learning Environments Audience: Instructional 9-12
Modern computer science curricula are focusing more and more on problem-solving
strategies, concepts, and algorithms, rather than on the syntactical details of
a particular language. Instead of teaching students to be good Java programmers
or good C++ programmers, effective teachers are first teaching the basics of
logical and precise thought. Jeroo is an innovative graphical environment for
introducing computer science topics in a fun and interesting way. It has many
features that support the study of computer science, including objects and
Java/C++-like syntax, but it focuses on a much smaller set of functionality,
allowing students to learn concepts by developing solutions to interesting
problems. As a result, students are immediately engaged in the learning
environment.
Session: 146 Title: Tech Plan a la Web: Creating a

Strand: eLearning Audience: Instructional PK-12
Want to start developing online learning activities and content for your
classroom but don’t want to learn HTML, programming, or scripting? This
presentation is for you! Teacher websites and traditional authoring tools (like
Dreamweaver, FrontPage, Flash, and Authorware) got us started, but as many
educators have discovered, these tools require a great deal of time to learn and
master. This presentation will take an up-close view at two emerging
technologies that hold the potential to greatly expedite the integration of
online technology and student-centered pedagogy into the classroom: Moodle and a
"next generation” authoring technology.
Session: 152 Title: Integrated Professional Learning
Programs: Survival Strategy or Right Thing to Do?
Presenters: Jo Williamson, Kennesaw State University ETTC; Traci Redish
Time: Thursday, 1:45pm - 2:45pm Location: Australian 3-4 S eats: 88
Strand: Leadership/Organization/Policy Audience: Administrative
Participants will review several programs that integrate technology-related
learning goals into other types of professional development programs. In some
programs, technology shares equal prominence with other topics. In other
initiatives, technology is barely mentioned, but participants still build
technology literacy and integration skills. It's downright sneaky! Is
integrated PD a survival strategy in times of low resources or the next logical
step in technology-related professional development? What do we gain by
integrating PD programs? What do we lose? What new roles are created for school
technology professionals when integrated PD programs are designed and
implemented? Are we ready for these roles?
