How do we need to rethink our ideas of literacy when we must prepare our students to become not only readers and writers but editors and collaborators as well? How do we best put to use the reams and reams of “digital paper” that this new “writeable” Web provides?

Let's be clear: designing and implementing a good security system takes time and money, and it's a pretty good idea to invest that time and money. But if you're short on time, then this session is the next best thing. In just a few minutes, you'll learn a bunch of short tips which don't take much time to implement and can shore up your system's security. Windows 2000 and 2003 (and even NT 4) include a ton of security features--but unfortunately, they don't enable them by default. Join a network geek and writer in a series of quick and dirty suggestions that'll help you caulk over some of those security holes!

Thanks to open source firmware, it's possible to convert consumer-level wireless access points into devices capable of doing just about anything with wireless. As a start, it's possible--and field-proven--to use it as a wireless, secure, bridge to connect trailers to the school LAN. It is also remotely manageable and configurable, capable of VPN and QOS, ready for IPV6, and upgradable for future wireless security. With some access points, it's even possible to create a NAS solution and web server.

Classrooms at Upson-Lee South Elementary are using Microsoft Movie Maker to produce videos that correlate to the Georgia Performance Standards. Students in a variety of grades and ability levels have played active parts in producing videos for culminating activities. Making movies is bringing the content to life for the students.

Today many classes use interactive lessons, but few of them actually have interaction. Using all forms of technology in the classroom can have students improving content mastery, life skills, and skills working within groups. This presentation will show how to incorporate various technologies into lesson plans so the students master not only content but other life-long skills such as cooperation and team building skills. This presentation will use the Internet, interactive answering devices, Bluetooth input devices, and various other technologies. Participants will learn how to involve each student in his/her own learning.

This session will present our experiences in incorporating podcasting into the middle school science classroom as a tool to aid students in developing and sharing their ideas. PowerPoint has been the standard presentation tool, but students who are comfortable using the latest gaming platforms and media players find assembling a slide show pretty boring. Podcasting provides students with access to a broader medium for presenting their ideas and empowers them with a sense of ownership that is absent with more traditional tools. It also encourages them to work as part of a team that uses the skills of each individual in researching, scripting, and producing the podcast as a coherent presentation by the group.

approach, using student-centered online activities. The milestones include creating a safe, online learning environment, creating a variety of online educational activities, and creating online educational modules or courses.
