In this presentation, participants will learn about online journaling tools called "blogs," tools that have reached a critical mass in higher education and are rapidly appearing in more and more K-12 classrooms across the country. You'll even learn how to make your own blog for free.

Standards tell us to use databases with our students. How do we do accomplish that in the classroom--particularly with elementary students? Attendees will explore a variety of databases created in AppleWorks, Excel, Access, MaxData (the new database module of Scholastic Keys), and InspireData. Database subjects include rocks, recipes, animals, books, elections, bibliography, geography, dictionary, word use, student interests, digestive system, vacation plans, planets, presidents, automobile costs, and entertainment costs.

The Georgia Department of Education Technology Division, Georgia Leadership Institute (GLISI), and Georgia Tech CEISMC have partnered to conduct a 21st Century Learning Environments research program in 12 schools across the state. The program was designed to collect tangible evidence of the impact of 21st century learning environments on instructional practice, student learning, and student achievement on standardized testing in the state. Significant changes that have ocurred will be discussed along with a review of the plan for the upcoming year.

Using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), you can set and edit, from one centralized document, site-wide properties like font, text size, text color, line spacing, background color or image, text wrapping, roll-over behavior, margins, borders, and much more. It's like putting these properties on remote control. You can also target changes in the properties of specified items on specified pages of your site.

In this session, participants will be provided information on installing, configuring, and monitoring a basic router using a modest desktop computer and the Linux-based Mikrotik software package. Attendees will receive a CD containing the current version of the Router OS that can be used without cost in a limited role. Router installation, configuration, and monitoring will be demonstrated and discussed. It is possible to convert a modest PC with two or more network interfaces into a router/firewall/Access Point controller using Mikrotik software at a very reasonable price, and it's not quite "Rocket Science."

Are you seeking an alternative educational path to assist those students who too often fall through the cracks? If so, this session will provide you with useful information on how an integrated learning system (ILS) is being used by one rural high school in southeast Georgia. Ware County sought an alternative path for its "at risk" students in order to better foster student academic success and ultimately improve graduation rates. Action research was conducted to determine the effect of the ILS, NovaNet, on student achievement in math, while at the same time assessing student, teacher, and paraprofessional attitudes toward the ILS method of learning. How the use of NovaNet may be related to students' locus of control was also examined.

Learn how older computers can be set up as high-performance, virus-free thin client workstations using the K12LTSP Free Open Source Software package (FOSS). The package includes the Linux operating system and dozens of software applications ranging from kindergarten to high school years and beyond, with an emphasis on math, science, and reading. Participants will learn how to freely obtain and install the software, configure their older school PCs as thin clients, and explore the new educational software applications included in the package. Participants will be given a set of installation disks at the end of the workshop, as well as a CD ROM they can use on their own computers that demonstrates how easy Linux and the new educational software applications are to use.
