The Georgia Department of Education, in collaboration with the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI) and twelve diverse Georgia K-12 schools, has completed the first year of a three-year 21st Century Learning Environments research program. Each school team developed a research plan linking technology integration with student achievement in specific areas of study. School leaders and teachers will report on their progress in a panel discussion that focuses on the first year of implementation. Integration of technology, 21st Century skills, and engaged learning will be the focus of the discussion.

Real world problems that require a quantity to be maximized or minimized usually involve more than two independent variables and have several constraints. The Simplex Method seeks out the solutions, known as the corner points in the Geometric Method. Using the TI-83 to perform the tedious calculations, we will review the Geometric Method and work toward a conceptual understanding of the Simplex Method. An understanding of matrix row operations is needed. Bring a graphing calculator!

Sharing a book is so much fun. You can use Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and KidPix to create electronic books that your students will love reading. In this session you will learn how to teach your students to create their own electronic books with easy step-by-step directions. Lucky participants will receive samples of electronic books.

This presentation will spotlight innovative ways to integrate technology into Social Studies lessons: ideas that are kid tested, standards based, and easily differentiated to students' (and teachers') abilities and technical savvy. Those attending are encouraged to share their own suggestions, concerns, and ideas. Although the specific ideas are targeted to grades 3-7, they could easily be adapted for younger or older students.

In order to understand how handheld computers can be used to support teaching and learning, in our workshop we will engage attendees in hands-on activities so they can get a first-hand experience about the role that handhelds can play. We will provide approximately 30 attendees with a PocketPC device for the workshop and we will all create typical learning projects, e.g., pick a country and write a report; describe the water cycle process, etc. Attendees will experience the fun and the serious learning that occurs as handhelds are used for curricular activities.

This session will explain the various laws that affect the technology used by the schools. The presentation will cover freedom of expression, search and seizure, copyright, and cyber-harassment issues. Included will be campus speech versus off-campus speech including Web pages, emails, and blogs that originate at home. Board Policies and Acceptable Use Policies will also be addressed.

The Georgia Department of Education is rolling out a new portal for districts to access applications and services. This Department of Education Portal is a new online interface that will give districts faster, easier, and more efficient access to your applications by consolidating access, providing news and tips, providing a way for the Department of Education staff to communicate with you, and providing quick access to documentation, online help, and training materials. In this hands-on session, the following questions will be answered: What is the Georgia Department of Education Portal? Why should I care? What can I do in the Portal? When will the Portal be ready to use? How do I apply for access to the Portal? Will I receive more
information about the Portal? How do I get into the Portal? How do the parts of the Portal work?
