Sessions 134-152
Thursday, 1:45-2:45
Session: 134 Title: 21st Century Learning –
Digital Literacies
Presenter(s): Cheryl Lemke, The Metiri Group
Time: Thursday, 1:45-2:45 Location: Salon 1
Seats: 260 Featured Speaker
Given the realities of globalization, knowledge work, and accelerating societal
change, it’s obvious that what students learn—as well as how and when they
learn—must change. While most educators understand—and espouse—the need to align
K-12 schools to today’s knowledge-based, technological society, few schools
today are effectively doing so. Emerging research clearly demonstrates that
technology can serve as a bridge to more engaged, relevant, meaningful, and
personalized learning – all of which lead to higher academic achievement. At the
same time, economic, geopolitical, and social trends clearly indicate that
technology literacy—and other 21st Century skills—will soon become required for
success in our knowledge-based society. The No Child Left Behind federal
legislation expects substantial learning gains from federal
technology investments. In this time of transition, school leaders are asking
important, new questions, “What does it mean to be ‘educated’ in this digital
age? Are graduates leaving school ready to thrive in this knowledge-based,
global society? Where do digital literacies and 21st Century skills fit in this
era of high stakes testing? Will 21st Century literacies result in higher
academic achievement by students?” Join this session to explore answers to these
questions. Learn more about the digital literacies students will require
tomorrow, exactly why they are so important, and how a school leader can
thoughtfully and intelligently incorporate such literacies into today’s schools.

Technology Integration for the Language Arts Classroom
Presenter(s): Larry Bedenbaugh, University of Central Florida

Some teachers equate student presentations via PowerPoint as the model for their
technology integration. To go beyond technology simply being "same story,
different tool," teachers need to model uses that could not be done without
using technology. This session will showcase best practices (e.g., online book
clubs, chat rooms, digital booktalks, blogs, webquests, and more) where the
technology is infused--not merely integrated--and can be accomplished with
limited resources. [The presenter stated that the focus of this
presentation is similar to that of his other presentation, Session # 188.]
