Schools are looking at a wide variety of technology solutions to improve student achievement.  There are a number of studies and recent articles that show the use of multimedia-based systems to improve student achievement.  An image-rich curriculum reaches more students, it motivates and engages students in the learning process.  For teachers, a multimedia system can be an effective tool to enhance teaching through visual literacy.  School management can use this technology to drive the consistency of curriculum implementation across the school district and address technology literacy goals for students and educators.  Technology can assist in the management of copyright issues and the control of accessibility to acceptable video material.  These are just a few of the benefits associated with a multimedia system within a school.

Session#:   17     Title: Technology Rich Departmentalized Team Approach

Presented By:  Gary Cantrell - Fort Stewart Schools, Donna Smith - Fort Stewart

Time: Wed. 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm  Seats: 75      Location: Suite C           Strand:  Elem.

This project began as an effort to provide maximum exposure to technology and to support high quality language arts instruction.   Language arts requires a great deal of individual instruction and, as a result, needed a great deal of time to accomplish.  Each class spends half of their day with each teacher.  The time in the language arts session is spent  participating in word processing, reading accountability programs (Accelerated Reader), and online comprehension instruction.  During the math/science/social studies session, students work with system-owned software, online presentations, WebQuests, and project-based science and social studies instruction.  Math is individualized with each student accessing their specific lesson each day and getting individual instruction as needed. Traditional small and large group instruction is worked into the schedule by dividing the students into groups with computer time being a required part of each day. During this session, participants will interact in this environment as students so that they can experience technology integrated into the overall classroom schedule.   Participants will actually rotate through the different phases of a day with the related technology. Participants will interact with digital cameras, computers, print, and kiosk technology.

Session#:  18    Title:  Crispen's Technology Primer

Presented By:  Patrick Crispen - Featured Speaker

Time: Wed. 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm  Seats: 800    Location: Monument       Strand: ALL

The hardware side of technology can be intimidating, even to experts.  This presentation helps you demystify some of the more common computer hardware you’ll find in some classrooms and in most big box retail stores.  In particular, you’ll learn the difference between USB 1.1, 2.0, and Firewire; what Wi-Fi is and what’s next in the world of wireless Internet; what a megapixel is and how many you really need; why you don’t have a PVR at home but should; the difference between power surges and power spikes and how to protect your equipment from both; and much, much more.  If you are overwhelmed by new technology, or if you are simply looking for an in-service that you can freely steal and present to your teachers back home, this workshop is for you.
