W15. Producing School News Shows Instructors: C. Curchy and K. This session will focus on the knowledge, skills, and techniques that media specialists and technology educators need to guide their students in the production of a student-produced school news show. Session contents will include: equipment selection and purchase, including VCRs, camcorders, tripods, audio mixers, video mixers, character generators, and multimedia computers; connection of television production equipment into a working studio; news crew jobs and responsibilities; organizing a school news show – formats, segment ideas, openings; making simple, low-cost sets and backdrops; lighting instruments and techniques; demonstration of an affordable teleprompting system. W16. Maximizing STAR Reading® and Accelerated Reader® Instructors: L. Cater, VSU ETTC Thursday 2/20 9:00 - 4:00 Cost: $110 Seats: 20 Room: 102 Participants will gain knowledge of and implement concrete strategies for identifying reading strengths and diagnosing emerging reading difficulties in children. As a school improvement initiative, teachers and school will prescribe and design instruction based upon diagnosed student learning needs. Through diagnostic and standards-based planning, responsive instructional design, technology-enhanced implementation, and focused reflection on student learning outcomes, teachers and administrators will utilize Accelerated Reader™ and STAR™ Reading programs in response to the unique instructional needs of the school community. Training will support participants as they learn to use and manage the Accelerated Reader™ and STAR™ Reading software. W17. Calling all Cool Curricular Camera Connoisseurs Instructor: V. Participants will receive wonderful classroom ideas for using digital cameras along with in-depth training on the use of the camera. W18. Transforming Your Portfolio From Paper To Digital Format: Planning Is Essential Instructors: C. Cearley, WGSU ETTC, and G. Burgess, ASU ETTC Thursday 2/20 9:00 - 4:00 Cost: $110 Seats: 20 Room: 104 Wondering what artifacts and articles to place in that portfolio? This session examines the various steps in planning for a digital or electronic portfolio. Using the ISTE NETS and the NBPTS, the facilitators will show how to analyze the standards to determine the articles and artifacts that best highlight the educator’s abilities and practice. Digital and electronic portfolios are easier to manage and update than paper portfolios, but are only as good as the planning that goes into them. Get the planning tips and assistance you need to make that digital or electronic portfolio a reality. This workshop will use a hands on approach using several types of software to create a digital portfolio to take home. W19. Introducing Technology and Paperless Classroom Environment Instructor: M. At the DeKalb Truancy School, they are preparing their students to meet the challenges of a paperless office by having paperless classrooms. Teaching means preparing students for the future. At the DeKalb Truancy School, their emphasis is preparing their students for the workplace that they will face upon completion of their education. They are pioneering a paperless classroom in which all assignments and assessments are on the network or on the web. By working in this medium, they are able to cut costs in administrative details, give their students a first-class education, and present them with real world challenges in a learning environment. Projects include: creating student portfolios, photo CD’s, multimedia projects and presentations, a virtual yearbook, guided/guarded web activities, and entire units of study neatly contained on one CD. Learn how to maximize standards-based Lexiled content that is current and timely to expand students’ reading, reading comprehension, subject knowledge, and technological understanding. Utilize content that is currently available to meet the objectives of Reading First legislation, Title I, Special Education and SCANs. Instructor: P. Glore, MSC Thursday 2/20 1:00 - 4:00 Cost: $55 Seats: 20 Room 101 Discussed will be an overview of the tools, functionality and uses for Flash applications. Flash MX is the 6th generation of Macromedia’s vector animation tool. It can be used to create great web delivered animations as well as dynamic applications. This workshop will be an overview of the tools inside Flash as well as how to use the tools. Discussed will also be the similarities and differences between Flash and other graphics packages. By the end of the workshop participants should have a better understanding of Flash and its application. W24. Using the Lexia CRT Results to Plan Effective Reading Instruction Instructor: V. Stoner and K. Hodges, ELS Thursday 2/20 1:00 - 4:00 Cost: $55 Seats: 20 Room K109 This workshop will provide information for interpreting the diagnostic information from the Lexia CRT. Hands-on activities with the software solutions recommended by the Lexia CRT prescriptions will also be reviewed. With approximately 450 schools in Georgia using the computerized Lexia CRT, teacher training is essential in the process of preparing teachers to use the diagnostic information to plan effective reading instruction. Many teachers lack the background knowledge needed to interpret diagnostic reading information and then use this information effectively.
